Find out more

Hi, I'm Ruth

I’m a freelance animateur and bassoonist ( click for orchestral biography) and currently work all over the United Kingdom.

Half English and half Venezuelan, I grew up in the Lake District, before studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and at Hamburg Hochschule für Musik und Theater.

In 2013 I was accepted onto the Spitalfields Music Animateur Trainee Scheme and now divide my time between my orchestral and education careers. My education work consists of presenting concerts and leading workshops. I love working with people and am passionate about classical music and making it accessible and fun for all.

Here are a few orchestras/ensembles for whom I have devised and presented family and/or schools concerts

Welsh National Opera
Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama
Hallé
Ensemble 360/Music in the Round
Royal Northern Sinfonia
City of London Sinfonia
Britten Sinfonia
Southwell Festival
Cambridge Philharmonic
Deal festival
Brandenburg Sinfonia

And here are a few orchestras/ensembles for whom I have worked as a workshop leader

National Youth Orchestra
National Children’s Orchestra
Philharmonia
Britten sinfonia
City of London Sinfonia
Orchestra Vitae
Music4life
Northern Chords.

Ruth has a very natural workshop leading style and kids respond straight away to her warm, friendly and enthusiastic approach.”

“It has been an absolute pleasure working with Ruth on a number of projects. Our musicians also love working with her as she is very much ‘one of them’ and there is an immediate trust created between music leader and orchestra. We’ve had wonderful feedback from audience members who attended concerts that Ruth presented.”

Helen Blythe - Royal Northern Sinfonia

“Ruth presents her concerts in a passionate and engaging way. She has an ability to make the music interesting and accessible to children.”

Clare Brockenbrow - Royal Northern Sinfonia

“So today we went to the ‘classics for kids’ performance at the Sage and thought it was absolutely fantastic. We went for the 2 seven year olds but the 2 three year olds were engrossed throughout too. And the adults learned a lot. It is pitched perfectly for kids with lots of interaction as well as teaching the kids (and grown ups) the technical terms and what to listen for in each piece of music. Today they concentrated on the violin and the next session will be the French horn. Honestly hugely recommended to everyone!”

Anonymous - Royal Northern Sinfonia

“My family and I thought the concert absolutely brilliant and very informative. Ruth the presenter was fabulous and so inspiring. A wonderful afternoon of music. Thank you so much. Our 7year old granddaughter has come to stay for half term and is at present learning to play the cello so I felt it was a great opportunity to see it being played within an orchestra. She loved the concert. A wonderful opportunity to enjoy classical music. Thank you so much.”

David Wilson - The Dales School (SEN)

“A number of staff came to me after school to say that Ruth and Ben’s music workshop’s were the best we have had for a number of years. In particular they were impressed by their adaptability to tailor the workshops to the different needs of each group and then to adapt as they went along according to student responses. In addition, it was lovely to have two people who were willing to have a go at signing in Makaton, picking up from staff how to sign particular phrases, in order to communicate better with our students.”
